Apple won't aid GOP convention over Trump - POLITICO

"Apple has told Republican leaders it will not provide funding or other support for the party’s 2016 presidential convention, as it's done in the past, citing Donald Trump’s controversial comments about women, immigrants and minorities.

Unlike Facebook, Google and Microsoft, which have all said they will provide some support to the GOP event in Cleveland next month, Apple decided against donating technology or cash to the effort, according to two sources familiar with the iPhone maker’s plans.

Apple’s political stand against Trump, communicated privately to Republicans, is a sign of the widening schism between Silicon Valley and the GOP’s bombastic presumptive nominee. Trump has trained his rhetorical fire on the entire tech industry, but he's singled out Apple for particular criticism -- calling for a boycott of the company's products, and slamming CEO Tim Cook, over Apple's stance on encryption.

Asked about Apple's absence, a spokeswoman for the GOP's convention host committee replied: 'We are working with a variety of major tech partners who are focused on being part of the American political process.'"

Coming to a Chromebook near you - Google I/O 2016 Will Android Apps Make Chromebooks Worth It?

ChromeOS Now Runs Android Apps, But Only On One Laptop

asus c100p chromebook flip performance

"Users have already tested a variety of Android apps, including Skype, Sync, Slack, MXPlayer, Kindle, and YouTube. Not every app works perfectly, but most of them are at least in good working order. Games, too, seem to run pretty well, including Crossy Road, Alto’s Adventure, Real Racing 3 and console emulators. While Android apps on ChromeOS still have room to improve, the feature seems to be off to a strong start.

Since the functionality is still restricted to a developer version of Chrome, it may still be a while before it trickles down to the average user. Then again, since Google does not restrict Canary downloads, anyone can try it out, at least. There’s no hard timetable on when other Chromebooks will gain (or iron out) the ability to run Android apps, or when the everyday version of Chrome will catch up with its developer counterpart. At the very least, it’s closer now than it was back in 2014."

macOS Sierra vs Windows 10: Why Apple Wins

"A year ago, Windows 10 beat OS X El Capitan in our faceoff, but Apple sure has worked it's tail off to make macOS Sierra more compelling. From bringing Siri from iOS to the desktop to beefing up Photos' features, macOS Sierra looks to give desktop Mac users the features they've been waiting for. Windows 10 Anniversary Edition is no slouch, but Edge is taking too long to become a browser that can compete with the field.

While these operating systems aren't the be-all and end-all behind shoppers decisions -- Mac hardware designs and PC gaming capabilities are extremely important -- there are enough differences between macOS and Windows 10 to predict a winner."

When black holes collide: Scientists find second set of gravitational waves - CNET

"A massive collision between two black holes 1.4 billion light-years away has yielded a second set of gravitational waves for scientists with theLaser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).
The news comes just a few months after LIGO scientists announced the world's first direct evidence of gravitational waves, and a century after Albert Einstein first described them in hisGeneral Theory of Relativity.
The first gravitational waves were detected on September 14, 2015, just three days after the LIGO facility was turned back on after a five-year upgrade to make the instrumentation more sensitive"

Why is Microsoft buying LinkedIn? | The Verge

"Microsoft just surprised the world with its LinkedIn acquisition. Valued at $26.2 billion, it's a huge price to pay for a social network, and it tops the charts as Microsoft's biggest-ever acquisition. As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's first major acquisition, the success or failure of LinkedIn will define him as the leader of Microsoft's increasingly service-driven future. While many are surprised at the cash figure, the question on everyone's lips is, why does Microsoft want LinkedIn?

Nadella's internal memo does a good job of providing a basic outline to partially answer that question, and more. Nadella points out that LinkedIn is "how people find jobs, build skills, sell, market and get work done." It's a key tool in the professional work space, with 433 million members and more than 2 million paid subscribers. Microsoft itself has more than 1.2 billion Office users, but it has no social graph and has to rely on Facebook, LinkedIn, and others to provide that key connection."
